Gourd Basket with Chrysanthemum Design, Ogata Korin, 1700s, Cleveland Museum of Art: Japanese ArtThis very rare basket is made from a carved gourd and inscribed on the bottom with the signature of Ogata Korin (1658– 1716), a painter and lacquerer who founded the Rimpa school. Here, he applied the chrysanthemums with white gesso in relief.
