incend-ium:I’ve been thinking about balance recently. Balancing all the different factors to truly find the most sustainable option. A couple of posts ago, I said glass is always the most sustainable option over plastic, because it can be infinitely recycled. After doing my research, I found that this is not necessarily the case. If a plane is stocked full of glass bottles instead of plastic, the carbon footprint of that plane is much higher because of the weight. Also glass takes a lot of energy to produce and recycle. So is glass always better than plastic? Sometimes it’s not. • • Another thing I’ve been researching is plastic packaging. Wrapping vegetables in plastic has it’s uses. It makes vegetables last up to 5 times longer, and if food waste was a country, it would be the 3rd highest emitter of greenhouse gases, after the USA and China. So if all supermarkets didn’t wrap their vegetables in plastic, would that really be more sustainable, with the effects that would have on climate change? • • It’s hard to know what the answer to these problems are. I’m still not comfortable buying vegetables wrapped in plastic, but luckily I have access to package-less veg. Maybe supermarkets should start using cellulose plastic wrapping which is biodegrable? That technology exists because some I’ve seen smaller eco-friendly brands use it and this would increase longevity of good without polluting the oceans forever. I also don’t think replacing all plastic bottles with glass bottles is sustainable. I think we should take action to persuade the local councils and government to increase the efficiency of recycling plants, so every plastic bottle is recycled. But of course plastic is only finitely recyclable too. Maybe the only true answer is that humans need to stop consuming so much pre-packaged food. • It’s complicated and I don’t think there’s one right answer. The world is so intertwined and there’s so many factors to consider.
