A map of Central Europe that was bought by an Air Ministry staffmember for 2s 6d (about five pounds today).Silk was unavailable after late 1940, and cotton was in very shortsupply during WW2, so it was difficult to find fabric to makeunderwear out of. Some women used “butter muslin,” which wasused in food preparation and available off-ration. Old silk garmentswere often cut up to make clothes.By 1945, a new supply of silk was available – surplus “escapemaps” issued to aircrews were sold off, and women made underwearand other clothes (such as blouses and dressing gowns) out of them. -- source link
