A tiny peninsula off the Arabian peninsula, nestled between the Gulf of Bahrain and the Arabian Gulf, the State of Qatar has been known for its pearls and textiles since antiquity, and after a tug-of-war between Bahrain and Saudi, submitted to Ottoman rule in 1871, although even at that time it had negotiated a protectorate with the British Empire, which was enforced in the mid-1910s.
