The mammalian diving reflex is an ensamble of physiological reactions that will change the normal functions of our body giving us increased survival capabilities during immersion, it can be found in any vertebrate studied till now. It’s activated when water enters inside of the nostrils and there is a cooling in other areas of the face reached by the fifth cranial nerve, a signal starts from it and reaches autonomous centers in the brain, the vagus nerve is now activated to realize the adaptations in the target organs; the aim is to conserve oxygen (it’s lowering in the blood during apnea is sensed too and part of the reflex activation mechanism).Different systems see changes after its activation but the most profound resides in the cardiovascular system. The blood is diverted from the limbs to the thorax, atrial volume increases and to compensate diuresis is increased too. There is a reduction of 20% of the normal heart rate, there’s a reduction of cardiac contractility and cardiac output to reduce the O2 consumption and to compensate the increased BP after vsoconstriction in the limbs (breath hold time can be lower though due to an increased methabolism to compensate the cooling effect of cold water).Cardiac arrhythmias are also quite common, the increased parasympathetic activity can start automatisms plus blood diversion and increased resistance to ventricular ejection can have a role too. ECG changes can be seen too.… … … … … … … … … … It’s a huge effort to realize these artworks, you can help me a lot by joining here:https://www.patreon.com/HeartLabIt’s just “a coffee” to you but you can make the difference to me! -- source link
