The Revolutionary Charleville — The French Model 1766 musketDuring the American Revolution the French would supply tens of thousands of muskets to the Continental Army. One of the most common was the Model 1766. The 1766 was an ideal musket for France to supply to the US because by then the French had adopted newer Models such as the M1774 and M1777. Produced between the Seven Years War (French and Indian War) and the and Revolutionary War, they saw little combat, thus the French had thousands of these muskets in almost pristine condition stored in arsenals.Like all Charleville muskets, the M1766 was equipped with barrel bands rather than pins. In addition they were also .69 caliber, common with all other Charleville models. Among American soldiers they became the most prized weapon available. Thus the Model 1766 would be used as a basis for the designing of the Model 1795 Springfield, the first American produced military musket. During the American Revolution France would supply nearly 50,000 Model 1766 muskets to the Continental Army. France would also supply tens of thousands more muskets in other models as well. -- source link
