Don’t Mess With Rome! — The FascesThe fasces was a ceremonial object from ancient Rome that become the official symbol of the Roman Republic. Typically the fasces was carried by ceremonial guards called lictors, and brought for battles, senate meetings, and military parades. Essentially the fasces was an axe surrounded by a bundle of sticks. This represented the state’s power to beat or behead the enemies of Rome. When Benito Mussolini came to power as dictator of Italy in 1922, he created a new form of government that emphasized nationalism, absolute power, the supreme authority of the state, militarism, and imperialism. Mussolini also sought to revive the glory and symbolism of ancient Rome, adopting the fasces as the symbol of his regime. As a result Mussolini’s new political movement became known as fascism. -- source link
