Japanese troops march into Mukden (now called Shenyang), 1931. On September 18, 1931, Japanese troops exploded a bomb (causing very little damage) on their own railway line in southern Manchuria. Soon after, the Japanese military accused Chinese activists of setting the explosive and invaded Manchuria, which became a puppet state of Japan called Manchukuo. The League of Nations soon proved that the entire incident had been manufactured by the Japanese, but was powerless to do anything to stop Japan.{WHF} {HTE} {Medium} -- source link
