archaicwonder:Roman Theseus Relief, 1st Century BC/ADFrom Cerveteri (map), Italy. In the center is the Greek mythological hero Theseus, shown lifting a huge rock under which his father Aegeus, King of Athens, had hidden the sword and sandals Theseus would need for his perilous journeys and labors. Theseus’ mother, Aethra, stands behind him, indicating the hiding spot. Aegeus buried his sandals and sword under the rock after Aethra became pregnant. He then told her that when their son grew up, he should move the rock, if he were heroic enough, and take the tokens for himself as evidence of his royal parentage. Made of terracotta. -- source link
