OLD ART-THE GALACTIC CITY, PART 6Even more of that comic I drew in middle school where I just torture The Great Annihilator constantly.I do kind of like the silhouette I gave him when he looks “invisible” because it’s a much simpler design and really a precursor to the design I give to the black hole characters now. I still don’t exactly know why I thought giving black holes humanlike clothes was a good idea (how is he wearing gloves??!! to hide his fingerprints???) and I really think a very simplistic design without a whole lot of features makes more sense nowadays. He also looks a lot cuter in that state. It is here that I perhaps should clarify that black holes can’t really become invisible. It is a common misconception, and I had it myself in middle school, but the gravitational lensing a black hole does cannot hide its shadow from view. The reason we can’t see isolated black holes in space is because it’s black against black, not because the black hole is invisible. Against a bright background a black hole’s shadow will always show up.I also mistakenly refer to gravitational waves as “gravity waves” here. Gravity waves are just waves where the restoring force is gravity. Ocean waves can be gravity waves for instance. The waves that travel through space-time are specifically called “gravitational waves.” This is also a common mistake I see a lot. -- source link
