thecringeandwincefactory:spaceexp:Our position in Laniakea Supercluster.“Laniakea” is ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi for something like the English words universe or cosmos or big sky or heavenly vastness and was so named because one of the astronomers who discovered/hypothesized it was at University of Hawai’i, and a professor of ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, Nawa’a Napoleon, who heard about it suggested the name in 2014. And that’s great and everything but I don’t want anyone to forget that there is a current 2019 struggle happening right now by Native Hawai’ians attempting to protect the sacred landscape that is Mauna Kea, ground zero for their creation story, from the installation of another telescope. I think it’s all very nice to “honor” the people you colonize by naming things after them, but if your respect doesn’t go further than that it signifies nothing. Do not @ me about this unless you have a pretty deep understanding of the legal precedents of NAGPRA, AIRFA, and NHPA, I got zero interest in entertaining uninformed bullshit by asshats. -- source link
