erikkwakkel:Unusual hunting partyWhile hunting scenes are frequently encountered in medieval books, this one is quite unusual. It shows a group of nobel ladies hunting (the figure on the right is still blowing her horn) and preparing the catch of the day, a deer, for transport. Stark is the contrast between the elegance of the hunters (who wear bright clothes, are well-groomed, and have sparkly stones in their hair) and their crude actions - the head on a spike tops it. The scene is particularly striking considering it takes place in the margin of a devotional book. The Book of Hours in which it features was used by a rich citizen of 14th-century London, who had hundreds of decorative scenes like this one added to the pages of the book. Entertainment was no doubt what he was after. And that’s just what he got.London, British Library, Yates Thompson, MS 13 (London, 14th century).
