Genetics is the most important element in a breeding program, unfortunately it is often overlooked. . . If you read my tweet, you’ll read “pointers point and retrievers retrieve” and the reason they do is 100% due to their genetic make up. I’ve yet to see someone get on their hands and knees to teach a dog to point at a quarry, let alone someone jump in the water to retrieve a bird with their mouth only for a dog to see it done. NOPE. . . It’s been bred into the dog where generations and years later it comes easy for a purpose bred dog to continue to do the job. The same can be said for a true American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) as per UKC (registry) states the breed can show some aggression towards other dogs while showing aggression towards humans is widely shunned. This is a big point of genetics and why some dogs (APBT, Bully’s and Bulldogs) show aggression. . . Lastly, how genetics have played a role in today’s sight hounds. Many sight hunting dogs don’t do well eating raw feed. Why, they’ve been basically bred to hunt and bring back prey to its human counterpart and not eat it as it was for human consumption and not for the dog. . .
