justanothergreyface:natural-lifters:cuteness–overload:Incredible shot of bison in Yellowstone National ParkSource: http://bit.ly/2FWbh04This looks like one of the local god mystical animals in ghibli filmsI read somewhere that the Yellowstone bison have a trade off to make in winter. They can stay out in the less geothermically active areas, where it’s colder and more energy has to be spent on body heat and clearing snow to get to last year’s grass (that big ol’ head makes an excellent side-to-side sweeper).Or they can move in closer to the geysers. It’s warmer there, and the warmth keeps the snow shallower, too, so the grazing is easier. The bison in the pic has taken this second option, you can tell by the frozen steam on its coat. The trade off is that the grass around the geysers is far heavier in silica than normal, and causes accelerated wear on their teeth. Nature isn’t kind. -- source link
