Well, they are different people of different strengths. She knows she can take Will, whereas Mattie is a different story. She knows she can’t take Mattie. She knows Mattie is stronger than she is (something that Mattie even mentions). So distraction (and playing up their relationship) is the only way to keep Mattie from killing Laura at the moment. This^^ so important. She played Mattie knowing that she still sees Carm as her little sisterThis is actually kind of fascinating–I hadn’t thought about it this way. I wonder if, in the next episode, Carm is just gonna be like ‘WHEW, I am SO GLAD that bitch is GONE.’ Except Carmilla actually likes Matska? The relationship we saw between Carmilla and Matska is definitely genuine.Carmilla is close to Mattie, for sure, but she’s had years to learn about Mattie and perfect the ways in which to distract or manipulate her (not necessarily in a bad way). When you’re close to someone, you know what makes them tick. She manipulated Mattie here by putting herself in front of Laura, bringing Mattie’s focus to her, and kept her attention with sisterly affections. It’s not until Mattie refocuses on Laura that Carmilla becomes serious with her, and as soon as Mattie backs off, Carmilla stands down (but still making sure to stay between Laura and Mattie). You don’t get to be 300+ years old without learning some interesting people skills, I bet.^ Same. And Carm has posted stuff on her Tumblr that reveals she has fond memories of her and Mattie together. Mattie was most likely a safe harbor for Carm when it came to their mother. I think their relationship is genuine. At least from Carmilla’s side. We’ll see how it plays out, though. -- source link
