Old Library (usually credited to Thomas Jefferson), University of Virginia, Charlottesville, 2007.While I have long found Charlottesville and the University of Virginia impossibly pretentious, today I have sympathy for both the school and the city, victims of radical right-wing (fascistic) terrorism. A KKK style torchlight parade on the grounds in front of this library began the weekend of terror, though the university played no role in promoting that event where several people protesting the terrorists were injured. That was followed by the events of Saturday after which three are dead and many more injured. There are few if any local roots for this terrorism. The University is still on summer break, and thus few students are around. The city has become a reliable bastion of moderation in the midst of a sea of racism and hatred. The desire of Charlottesville to deal with the stains of its history and remove the statue of the Civil War era terrorist and traitor Robert E. Lee should be applauded by all Americans, just as the attack on the city and its ideals should be condemned and those responsible punished to the full extent of the law. -- source link
