steve-rogers-new-york:This topic is brought to you thanks to my amazing Patreon Supporters!Steve’s Camp Lehigh UniformHere is a rough breakdown of Steve’s uniform while training at Camp Lehigh.Based on stills from CA:TFA, I’ve gone through and compared them to known WWII uniform items. Now, military history is not in my wheelhouse, so while I have done my best to be accurate, I am always happy to be corrected!HelmetM1 Helmet —This was the stock-standard issue combat helmet during WWII. It was one-size-fits-all, with adjustable suspension straps inside.Image source: [A] [B]T-shirtThe t-shirt seen would have been the standard white undershirt. In the scene with Erskine, he can also be seen wearing a printed version with the SSR logo on it, but in the training scenes, it’s just a plain t-shirt-style undershirt.Image source: [A] ShirtHerringbone Twill, Specification PQD 45 — Based on the striped-colouration of the material, and the pocket-shape, it is most likely his shirt is Herringbone Twill — however, it is classified as a ‘jacket’ not a shirt. The colour appears to be olive drab. Upon reviewing footage (00:12), the weight design and button placement also match.Image source: [A] [B]PantsHerringbone Twill, Specification PQD 45 — I am quite sure that if the shirt is indeed Herringbone Twill, the pants would be the matching style. Additionally, with close inspection of the stills, they also have a slight lined-colouration and they appear to be a thicker material than cotton. There is also no pockets on his pants, which matches with these ones and not other work/fatigue pants. The colour appears to be olive drab.Image source: [A] [B]DrawersCotton/Wool Drawers — Yes, we can’t see them, but it’s fair to assume he is also kitted out in the official issue drawers. They came in white and olive drab, made from cotton and wool/cotton-blends.Image source: [A] [B] [C] [D]LeggingsM1910 Canvas Leggings — These came in three shades of material: Blch Khaki, Mustard Khaki, and Pea Green. I’m inclined to say Steve is wearing Pea Green, but it’s not particularly clear, they look darker in the stills. These are worn over the breeches and shoes (see image #2). The pair Steve is wearing is also quite long, coming to below the knee — some other styles were much shorter. Based on reviewing the footage (03:03), they appear to be 8-hook length.Image source: [A] [B] [C]ShoesType I or II Service Shoe—These are 8-eyelet, brown-leather ankle-boots, with a flat smooth, rubber sole and slight heel. They appear to have been standard-issue, and commonly paired with the canvas leggings. It is the most likely match. Image source: [A] [B]There is a degree of guess-work with the shoes, as they are often only just in scene and are also partially covered by the leggings. Based on the few scenes they are visible, they are brown-leather, have a smooth sole, and are laced. Their height is unclear as the leggings cover the top of the shoe. While Steve is crawling under the barbed wire, another soldier’s soles can be seen to have a slight heel (01:30), and again in the push-ups scene (03:01). Check out the links for each item, there is a lot more about them on a lot of WWII re-enactment and reselling websites. Again, if I’m off on any other let me know, I’m happy to correct myself.I’ll have some more of these types of posts on outfits in future, so keep and eye out!Image SourcesScreen captures by D. of SRNYWhite undershirt and draws | SourceHerringbone Twill Jacket, olive drab | SourceHerringbone Twill pants, olive drab | SourceCanvas leggings | SourceType I Service Shoes | SourceThis post comes to you thanks to Patreon supporters at the ‘Ephemera Club’ level.
