James Edward Whitney collection of playing cards.MS Am 2204 (13)Houghton Library, Harvard UniversityNotes compiled by the collector: A German pack, but the suit-marks are of the French type, as the pack was intended for English and American players. On the Knave of Clubs is printed the maker’s name: “B. Dondorf. Frankfurt A/M.” The “Joker” bears a fool’s head and the title: “The Jolly Joker.” The figures on the Court Cards are represented in eighteenth century costume, and are drawn double busts in reverse. This pack is an example of a rather popular kind of fancy playing-card, such as are often given as “prizes” at card parties. The cards are of superior quality and the designs are of considerable artistic merit. Bought of R. Schwartz, Boston, 1901. -- source link
