Sorghaghtani, queen of the Mongols (right center), with her husband Tolui, son of Genghis Khan. Sorghaghtani, like many Mongol noblewomen, had an impressive amount of influence on affairs of state. Tolui briefly ruled the empire from 1227-1229 after Genghis Khan’s death and then handed power to Ogedei, who had been Genghis’ choice for a successor. Tolui died soon after. But Sorghaghtani was a major player in Mongol politics until her death in 1252, playing kingmaker and demanding concessions from the male leaders of the empire.{WHF} {HTE} -- source link
