The SA (Sturmabeitelung) was a paramilitary groups formed with the creation of the Nazi Party that specialized in intimidation and street fighting. After Hitler gained power in Germany he felt that the SA was unnecessary and perhaps even a risk to his rule. Viktor Lutze, Hermann Goering, Heinrich Himmler, and Reinhard Heydrich helped Hitler draw up a list of all SA and Nazi Party officials that were determined to pose a risk to Hitler’s authority. On the top of that list was SA Chief Ernst Rohm. In 1934, in an incident called the “Night of the Long Knives” various key Nazi Party officials were round up and executed. Rohm too was shot in the chest. After Rohm’s death Viktor Lutze was made head of the SA as the SS superseded it in power. The SA would continue to exist but only as a token force with little responsibilities. Lutze was killed in a car crash in 1943.Viktor Lutze’s pistol recently sold at auction for $210,000. -- source link
