militant-holy-knight: The Great Siege of Malta—one of the most historic and iconic sieges in European history. Approximately 6000 Christian soldiers comprised of local Maltese, Italians, Spanish, French, Germans, Greeks, and a single Englishman, led by Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Valette, withstood a four-month siege at the hands of 48.000 Ottomans. After 130.000 cannonballs and approximately 30-35.000 Turkish deaths, the Ottomans finally gave up and began to abandon the siege on 8 September 1565. Three days later, on 11 September 1565, the Christian relief forces routed the remaining Ottoman troops. The 8th of September, the day that the Turks began to flee, has been an official holiday in Malta since 1924, celebrated as ‘Victory Day’ or the ‘Feast of Our Lady of Victory’. -- source link
