M6 Survival Rifle,Originally created by Ithaca Co. these rifles were manufactured for the use of the US Air Force as a survival weapon. In other words, it was not made for combat, but rather for use as a survival weapon for a shot down pilot so he or she could hunt small game for food. A double rifle, the M6 had two barrels, one that fired a .22 hornet, and another which fired a .410 shotshell. Both calibers are excellent for hunting small critters. Its biggest advantage is its size, small and light enough to be stowed away in an aircraft. It can fold in half for easier storage. It has an enlarged trigger guard and modified trigger so that a user can fire it while wearing heavy gloves. It is mostly made of stamped metal, all except the barrels, which greatly saves on weight. A compartment in the stock holds 4 shotshells, and 15 rounds of .22 cartridges. The original Ithaca Air Force models were 14 inches long, thus considered an AOW under NFA law, requiring a tax stamp for sale. Eventually the Air Force would drop the M6, causing Ithaca to discontinue its production. However, Springfield Armory, Inc. would adopt and renew production of a civilian design, called the M6 Scout. Modifications include lengthing the barrel to NFA standards, and chambering it for .22 long rifle instead of hornet, which is a much more common cartridge. It became very popular among bushpilots, campers, hikers, and all sorts of wilderness adventurers. -- source link
