kevinsworldofcomics: A Cover I Love: Limited Collector’s Edition #C-31 by HJ Ward (art from 1940, comic from 1974). When I found this back issue as a kid, I only knew that there was something… different about the image of Superman vs any of the others I’d seen. Despite all the time I spent practicing the S shield, I somehow never realized: the one on his chest here has SIX sides!Since then, I also learned that a) this was the only time the shield was illustrated this way, b) it’s also the first painted image of Superman, c) that it hung in publisher Harry Donenfeld’s office, and d) that he originally looked like the Golden Age Superman before someone — there’s speculation it wasn’t Ward — retouched it.(Kate Willaert’s blog has a good overview on the mystery here.)
