As always @the.holistic.psychologist #Repost @the.holistic.psychologist ・・・ I was trained to diagnose symptoms + label people with “disordered” as a clinical psychologist. There was very little education around the root causes of WHY people had their symptoms. The focus was much more on symptom management, or suppressing (removing) the symptoms which is very common within today’s medical system. It wasn’t until I started to intensely study the nervous system: how it worked, how it created the human behavior, + why it needs to be addressed in order to empower people to heal. Once I understood this, I started seeing the effects of chronic nervous system dysregulation in myself + in my clients. A nervous system that is always ready to fight threats or danger creates symptoms that we call disorders. Though, this is actually or body trying to PROTECT US from danger. It’s the body doing what it’s evolved to do for thousands of years. Our nervous system works like an alarm system, activating stress hormones to help us escape the situation (fight, flight, flee). But for many of us, these stress hormones are a constant in our blood stream. Leaving us distracted, having memory problems, feeling panic, or completely leaving our body through dissociation. We can all do the work to leave survival mode, to teach our body safety in small moments each day, to learn how to breathe to shift not only our body into rest + relaxation, but our mind. So many people have “intrusive thoughts” or “OCD” (I too was diagnosed with this) not understanding thoughts reflect our nervous system states.
