His relief was so overwhelming and you were just so fucking happy to be back home and to see him. “Easy,” you breathed as he pulled back suddenly. But you were still smiling at him. Siddiq was standing back watching the reunion with a smile on his face. “She’s a bit banged up. Deep bruising and maybe a fractured rib or two,” he explained. “But her spirits are good. Better now you’re here, Daryl, it seems,” he said knowingly. You shot a look at him around Daryl’s shoulder and he only smiled more widely at you and lifted his eyebrows.Daryl’s face flushed. “Sorry. ‘M sorry…” he said hurriedly, lifting his hands from you. “I—’m just so fuckin’ glad yer here and alrigh’… What the hell happened to ya? Jesus, I was so fuckin’ scared!”You shrugged, still unable to stop smiling at him. “I—had to jump out of a moving vehicle to get away,” you said. “I’ll be honest, it wasn’t great.”Daryl clasped your face in his hands and studied you closely, his blue eyes darting from one injury to the next to your matted and dirty hair. You had some bruises and scrapes, nicks and cuts. There was blood crusted on your forehead and staining your cheek. “Why hasn’t anybody gotten ya a damn cloth to clean up yer face?” he asked to no one in particular. “Would somebody please get her a damn cloth!”You laughed a little and gently gripped his wrist. “I’m okay.”“Like hell ya are.” His face was overcome with worry. He seemed loath to let go of you.“I am,” you said. “I’m back. And you’re here.”He slipped his hands away from you reluctantly and you dropped your hold on his wrist as Siddiq came back with a damp cloth and a basin of warm water. Daryl accepted it and started to clean you up, moving in close to stand almost between your knees where you were seated up on the table. Siddiq could tell he wasn’t needed any further. “I’ll be in the office if you need anything else,” he said softly. He didn’t get a response.You watched the water in the bowl turn faintly pink as Daryl dabbed carefully at your injuries. You felt yourself fading fast all of a sudden, the adrenaline of the escape and getting home waning. “Daryl…” You nearly wavered where you sat. “I’m really tired,” you breathed all of a sudden.Daryl pulled back and studied your expression. “Ya. I bet ya are. Nearly done. Then I’ll walk ya home and ya can rest,” he said softly. You had missed the deep bass and gritty gravel of his voice. It seemed to warm you.“Will you stay with me?” You weren’t sure where the courage to ask came from, maybe just because you were so exhausted all of a sudden you didn’t stop to think about it first. He looked surprised and stunned for a moment before he continued his ministrations and wiped away the last of the dried blood from your cheek. He tossed the cloth back down in the bowl. He chewed on his bottom lip nervously for a moment before he nodded. “If ya want. Anythin’ ya want.” You started to slide down off the table onto your feet and Daryl gently helped you. Your knees almost buckled from the pangs of pain that jostled through you when your boots hit the floor, but he steadied you with careful hands. “I just want you,” you told him seriously. “I mean—” No. You wouldn’t walk that back. For once you’d said exactly what you meant. “Yes. I just want you actually,” you said again. “And some fucking sleep…”He gulped. “C’mon. Let’s get ya home and restin’ up.
