The Lakota called it “mako sica” and the trappers had their own word for it “les mauvaises terrestrial à traverser” two different words, two different groups but one translation “bad lands.” The badlands were once a shallow sea, now the remains of the past lie scattered across the land with 35 million year old fossils, rock spires, pinnacles, a scorching sun, artic winters, bone chilling wind, rugged buttes, dusty siltstone, shale, sandstone, volcanic ash and a wonderland for adventure. -- source link
