This earliest painting – literally, oil paint on a panel, of Easter Island statues. The statues, called moai, are upright with their tufa stone “hats” intact. It was painted by the HMS Rendevous artist, William Hodges, on Cook’s second voyage to explore the Pacific. Completed from 1776 to 1777 on Hodge’s return to London. -- source link
