On June 18, 1983, NASA Astronaut Sally K. Ride became the first American woman in space. In preparation for her trip, tampons were packed with their strings connecting them, like a strip of sausages, so they wouldn’t float away. NASA Engineers asked Ride, “Is 100 the right number?” Sally Rides, who would be in space for just a week, replied “That would not be the right number.” ♀️ In the late 1970s, NASA decided to expand astronaut selection from only pilots to scientists and engineers, which allowed women to become eligible for selection. Sally Ride and five other women had been selected in 1978 for NASA Astronaut Group 8, the first American selection class to include females. Since then more than 40 American women have entered space. The first woman in space was cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova from the Soviet Union, who flew in 1963. The majority of space flight programs were slow to employ women, and only began to include them from the 1980s.Art by Liberal Jane Illustration -- source link
