The Brooklyn Museum Library and Archives #BKMLibrarycontinues its coverage of the romantic and wedding-filled month of June bycelebrating marriage equality. This week we’re highlighting a significant workfrom our collection of artists’ books – ‘Stateof the Union’ by Robert Ransick.“State of the Union” began as a print installation thatfocused on U.S. states that had amended their constitutions to define marriageas between a man and a woman. Each of the 31 prints in the originalinstallation included the state ballot title, the text of the ballot measureand the official voter result. The ‘Stateof the Union’ exhibit was published as a book by Printed Matter. As in the original installation, the color of the lavender-hued images on thepage is deeper when more voters in the state rejected the measure; the color islighter when more citizens voted yes. With his unique use of color as an alternative way ofcommunicating dry data, Ransick creates a stunning visual map of attitudestowards marriage equality throughout our country. The pages of the book arealso altered to show how the ballot measures would read in a country with fullmarriage rights for all. More images of the international struggle for LGTB rightsand marriage equality can be seen at the Brooklyn Museum inthe work of ZaneleMuholi in her current exhibit ZaneleMuholi: Isibonelo/Evidence.Posted by Roberta Munoz -- source link
