From early July to mid-August, the galleries and studios at the Brooklyn Museum have been filled with the laughter and exploration of adventurous campers. These campers were a part of the Brooklyn Cultural Adventures Program (BCAP). The BCAP Summer Camp is a day camp for ages 7-12, sending campers on adventures to six partner cultural institutions in Brooklyn: Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Brooklyn Children’s Museum, Brooklyn Public Library, Brooklyn Museum, Prospect Park Audubon Center & Lefferts Historic House, and Prospect Park Zoo. As Family Programs & BCAP Summer Intern, I have been teaching Stay & Play, BCAP’s after-care program, and assistant teaching the BCAP gallery lessons during the day alongside Museum Educator Marisa Williamson. It was an exciting challenge and opportunity to develop lesson plans for this program, all based on the delicious theme of “Good Eats.”Stay & Play was a really exceptional extension of BCAP, continuing our exploration of the galleries and art-making activities in the studios. With four Stay & Play lessons per session, campers have:Created their own placemats inspired by Judy Chicago’s The Dinner PartyBuilt sculptural foods and flowers to create a 3D still life after comparing and contrasting different still life paintings in the American galleriesExplored Ancient Egypt through storytelling before building pyramids from wooden sticks and marshmallowsDiscovered the significance that doors and entry points can have before creating a self-descriptive or self-representative painting with liquid watercolors and oil based pastelsTeaching Stay & Play has been a wonderfully unique experience—it combines campers of all ages (7-12) and allows them to experience the museum space in an even more intimate way. Scaling a lesson for a wider age range, creating a relaxed learning environment for an after-care program, and allowing campers to experience the museum in new ways are all important aspects of our Stay & Play lessons. For as much as I was able to teach our adventurers about certain works of art or artistic processes in the studio, they were also able to teach me so much about what it means to think critically and creatively as an educator.Posted by Heidi Brueckmann -- source link
