nowthisnews: The first medicine seen to be effective against COVID-19 will no longer be free, beginning in as little as one week. The Remdesivir treatment, developed by drugmaker Gilead but sponsored largely by taxpayer-funded agencies, is shown to quicken recovery times for severely ill COVID-19 patients by up to 4 days. Remdesivir remains the only therapy authorized by the FDA to treat hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Gilead will begin charging those with private insurance $3,120 per treatment plan, and those with government health programs $2,340 per plan. The out-of-pocket amount will vary based on insurance, income, and other factors. The drugmaker says that cutting 4 days of hospital costs saves approx $12,000 per patient. Remdesivir has not been shown to make a significant difference in the survival rate. follow @nowthisnews for daily news videos & more -- source link
