Antoninus Pius, aka TITVS AELIVS HADRIANVS ANTONINVS PIVS AVGVSTVS, (841-864 ab urbe condita)Fourth member of my Nerva-Antonine series, Imperator Antoninus Pius. See the rest of the dynasty here [x] and read more about him below the cut.☆Merch Here☆I know that most of my artwork revolves around the end of the Republic, but my undergrad thesis actually involves the coinage of second and third centuries! This period was full of just as much drama as the beginning of the empire and I love everyone (mostly). Antoninus Pius is one of the “good emperors” and is known for having a generally peaceful rule. During his reign he issued many coin images pairing himself with pietas, his self-proclaimed cognomen. The closest translation is “piety” but, to the romans, pietas was one’s devotion to state, family, and the gods. For this portrait I chose the religious aspect and depicted him in the garb of Pontifex Maximus, the highest priest. -- source link
