Navy recruits queuing up at base, while a radiographer positions oneof them for a chest X-ray.During the 1940s, a mass radiography system scheme was put in placefor the early detection of active tuberculosis.  It was used first bythe navy, and then by the RAF and the army.200 X-ray photographs were taken per hour and produced on a“miniature cinematograph film”.  The film was projected onto afull-size screen and examined, so that abnormalities could bedetected, and the patient referred for a full-scale X-ray andtreatment.In 1941, there were 50,964 notifiable cases of TB in England andWales, and 23,200 deaths.  Later, it was suggested that the schemeshould be expanded to include schoolchildren and immigrants. -- source link
