consultingdragoness: jinglebreffs: You’ve met him. How many friends do you imagine he has? this post was not okay But needed. John Watson means every bit as much to Sherlock as Sherlock does to him, always has, maybe even more. No matter what he does or says, Sherlock cares very deeply for the people he does care for and John is probably the first on that list. John himself would do anything for Sherlock: he protects him, he defends him, he humanizes him and, barely a year into their friendship, he offers to die for him, an offer he’ll repeat many, many times. But what makes John unique is not just his devotion: it’s how much Sherlock acknowledges and appreciates him. He might be rude, arrogant, an outright jerk to John at times, but John is, at the end of the day, his best friend and not just because he has no other options, but because, from the first day they met, Sherlock decides to care about him and his opinion and John proves himself to be worthy of that. John sees through Sherlock’s barriers and, eventually, Sherlock begins to prove himself worthy of what John sees as well: not a machine, but a very human, very heroic individual. Sherlock and John choose each other to trust and love, of all people: a cold, lonely consulting detective and a war-worn, damaged army doctor: two such unlikely companions, whose friendship is, honestly, part of why these stories continue to fascinate us: Sherlock Holmes would never have been as popular without the kind, forgiving and humanizing eye of Doctor Watson. This series does a wonderful job of exploring how they go so quickly from being flatmates to soul mates and makes it believable: there’s a transition here, not an abrupt change and I love that, how much they grow and help each other there. -- source link
