historicpicturess: In the August of 1918, Gabriele D’Annunzio decided to celebrate the fourth anniversary of the war started by Austria with an extraordinary brave act, in order to celebrate the new aggressive spirit of the army. On 9th August, at 05.30, the squadron “Serenissima” composed of seven single-seaters an one two-seater (the one with D’Annunzio sitting in the front, despite it wasn’t him who drove it) guided by the poet and Natale Palli, rose in flight. During the flight, a device fell, but it didn’t obstruct the group to continue its mission. Once arrived over Vienna, they started to throw thousands of copies with two messages printed on an Italian flag. After the incursion on the enemy capital, the moral effects were incalculable. -- source link
