“We know that in September, we will wander through the warm winds of summer’s wreckage. We will welcome summer’s ghost.“ — Henry RollinsGreetings from New York! Have you sent that postcard detailing the adventures you had this summer whether near or far? Better get on it because summer is almost over! Summer getaways to escape the concrete jungle of NYC can be as simple as a subway ride to Coney Island, exploring hidden gems in the Hudson Valley or sunbathing in the Rockaways—or maybe you chose to stay local in Brooklyn and take advantage of the Hotel St. George’s Grand Ballroom which is “now—superbly air-conditioned.” Or maybe you traveled beyond our fine city to exotic lands such as Haiti, Lima, Tokyo, or Warsaw as depicted in #BKMLibrary’s Special Collections Postcards, 1942-1958.Before the age of Instagram, people shared memories and photos of their travels through postcards. As summer winds down, we become nostalgic for the often brutally hot season in a haze of fuzzy summer memories before we jet off one last time over Labor Day Weekend. Let the Brooklyn Museum Libraries and Archives take you down memory lane with our fabulous collection of postcards, artist’s books, and travel books to reflect on a season we know isn’t quite over yet but are already dread its impending end. After Labor Day we’ll be longing for melted ice cream cones on a hot summer day, but we can remember the joys of summer when Coney Island: Visions of an American Dreamland comes our way in November!Posted by Kim Loconto -- source link
