r0tomdex: thefingerfuckingfemalefury: red-lipstick: Gigantic 16th century sculpture known as Colosso dell’Appennino, or the Appennine Colossus located in the park of Villa Demidoff (just north of Florence, Italy). It was erected in 1580 by Italian sculptor Giambologna (1529-1608, Italy). It’s only a matter of time until this thing comes to life… You guys are missing the BEST FUCKING PARTS, the sculptor’s name literally translates to JOHN BOLOGNA. He was a sculptor in the tail end of the high renaissance, when it seemed like everyone in Italy was trying to make it as an artist sticking with the High Renaissance style of sculpture (you know, weird hand gestures and dicks out, stoic faces, all of the story contained in the subtle expressions of the sculptor) and it was getting ridiculously boujee and self-absorbed. Like, art wasn’t even GOOD anymore it was just, like, realizing that there were very specific parameters that you had to follow to succeed in sculpture, and so everyone just pandered to those parameters. But John Bologna was like “fuck that, Michelangelo already made David, we’re all wasting our time because art is a game and Michelangelo already won” and John Bologna started a whole new movement of sculpture known as Mannerism - This was basically the Renaissance art equivalent to DJ Kool Herc creating hip hop. The movement emphasized exaggerated forms (see above) which was just a giant fuck you to the renaissance movement which was all about trying to hide a story inside of a small gesture. Bologna also introduced “Forma Serpentina” which is the idea that your art shouldn’t have just one intended focal point, but enough interesting things spread around that the sculpture is interesting regardless of where the subject goes. All of this led to art becoming fucking DOPE - The High Renaissance is when art became super technically developed but it wasn’t until Mannerism that art actually got good again, and that’s why I think Giambologna deserves to be a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, thank you for coming to my ted talk -- source link
