montagnarde1793:saintjustitude:bunniesandbeheadings:villorceau:~Original~ decree of the National Convention dated 5th September 1793. This sets out some details relating to the Committee of Public Safety: first of all, who may be a member (no members of the former nobility and no unmarried priests), and then what each member is to be paid (three livres per day, the money to come from a special levy on les riches). Printed in Paris, and the typesetting is somewhat irregular, as can be seen. Scans once again my own.I’m almost certainly having a brainfart and forgetting something obvious but I’m wondering. With these parameters, how did Herault de Sechelles manage to sit on the Committee of Public Safety, given his status as a ci-devant? Is it just because he was elected before 5 September so got “grandfathered in,” so to speak, or was there some other wrangling? That’s a very good question, but alas I don’t know. You’ll notice it’s comités de salut public (plural). They’re probably talking about the departmental committees and not “the” CSP. Oops, reading comprehension fail: they’re talking about the sectional comités de salut public. Point still stands though. -- source link
