ffooooooooood: chaorex: gallusrostromegalus: Animal fun fact: Chinchillas can’t get wet. Their fur retains too much water and will start to grow mold. So they bathe by rolling around in dust. Chinchilla fun fact: Chinchillas have around 20 hairs per follicle; unlike humans who have 2-3 hairs per follicle. Because their fur is so dense, they cannot get fleas or other parasites. The bugs will suffocate in their fur. Chinchilla fun fact: Petting one of those awesome little guys feels like touching a motherfucking cloud. Chinchilla not-so-fun fact: These little shits are nocturnal, so they’re cute and docile during the day, but are constantly doing and running and stuff when you’re trying to sleep. They’re actually not quite nocturnal – they’re crepuscular, meaning their peak activity periods are dawn and dusk. I have 4 chinchillas who follow this schedule. They are awake when the sun rises, so from about 7AM until about 9 AM. Then they sleep from 10 AM all the way until about 7 PM. then they are active from 7 until about 10. They are sleeping from 11pm until 7 am again. So they are really only super active when the sun rises and sets. This would maybe only be a problem for someone who goes to bed early. I absolutely love my chinchillas …even through they scream randomly throughout the day (as if they are dying) and I run to find them completely fine every time. (Their AAAAAAAAAAAAA! means “I’m bored.” Or “turn the light off”.) Or, you know, I’m being menaced by your cat who’s looking at me like I’m a tasty snack.Cat: You look like me, but you’re small and loud… (He’s either a Russian Blue or a Korat)Similarly, crepuscular chinchillas are also a problem for people who don’t normally wake up until 11am at the earliest like my mother. -- source link
