sweeterxfiction: I’ve seen a few posts of lists of Black-owned bookstores going around. I saw this one on a list and thought they had a cool story and wanted to share it. In the late 50s, at a time when stocking books focusing on African American history and culture was basically unheard of, Duwad Hakim did just that! He was the first to do something like this in Philly and one of few in the US. The store became known for stocking rare books and scholars and student used it as a groundbreaking source of info that couldn’t be found in mainstream bookstores or libraries. It became so influential that those mainstream bookstores started buying those rare books wholesale from Hakim. They couldn’t find those books anywhere, so they literally had to buy them from him. His daughter and granddaughter carry on his work today. Learn more about his story here! If you’re looking for books to learn from, this is definitely a good place to look! They also ship internationally, but the shipping costs will be higher. -- source link
