kurozu501:was rewatching an old excellent video essay about KH Days, found this comment and wow, this person really fucking gets it. I’ve always been fascinated how during the Days-KH2 period Sora, the image of Sora and his memories become almost weaponized against Roxas and Xion. Simple cute scenes from KH1 become menacing flashes of a life thats not theirs, that leave them disoriented and confused. So many lines that seemed unimportant get brought back up in this new disturbing context. One moment that always stands out to me is when Roxas falls into a coma and then we hear Kairi say “i knew that i’d find you snoozing down here.” In KH1 that moment was just friendly teasing but here that line becomes menacing, a voice strangely relevant to Roxas’ current situation but also clearly not talking to him.And indeed, almost everyone who isn’t Axel treats them both as just an extension of Sora, someone who only exists to be used against Sora or needs to be sacrificed to help him. The supposed good guys, Riku and Namine, decide that Sora’s life is just worth more then Xion and Roxas’ lives and decide to erase them both for his sake. When the villains want you to die to further their plans and the heroes also want you to die to further their plans, where can you go? What path is left for you?The most tragic part of the whole thing is that their lives are ruined for Sora’s sake when we all know: Sora would never want that. If Sora was awake, if he had any agency in this situation, he would tell Riku and Namine to stop, to find another way. And that’s exactly what he does when he learns about them and goes to help them in Dream Drop Distance and KH3. But during Days and KH2 he’s asleep and so he just becomes this distant figure that everyone insists is more important then Roxas and Xion, and whose shadow looms over their lives and distorts it in countless ways.
