That is an interesting read but there are two problems with it: firstly, it doesn’t define what constitutes “lasting importance” and secondly it doesn’t account for bands that are passionately terrible? A band like Insane Clown Posse have formulated a coherent aesthetic and executed it competently. You could say that they have “lasting importance” because they’ve been successful building a huge fanbase and have maintained a level of notoriety. They have “real power” because they sell albums and run a record label and put on a huge music festival every year. It’s hard to say what their “imagined power” is but from the interviews I’ve read and watched them in they don’t seem to have any delusions of grandeur. So I would apply the formula like this: (9 + 9) X (7 + 6 + 1) = 252 Which is a score that puts them on par with Big Black and Lynyrd Skynyrd, according to that article.
