No longer could he expect to do whatever he wanted but had to clear it through his stepmother to see if she would allow it. She did give him the option of Not doing as she said. Though doing so carried certain *unpleasant* consequences. She didn’t like it to either have her judgments questioned or ignored or worse; her orders directly disobeyed. And was quite capable of, and free in, letting him know Exactly how she felt about such defiance. Much to Robbie’s misfortune, chagrin and pain. -- source link
