The tomb of Tom Sayers, bare-knuckle fighter and something of a national hero, paid for by his loyal fans. His funeral in 1865 attracted some 100,000 attendees, the procession crowd reportedly stretching over two miles. His beloved mastiff, Lion, was chief mourner at the service, sitting alone in a pony cart drawn behind the bier. This lifelike statue of him now guards Tom’s tomb for all time.
