dogeye: Athens, December 1944-2015.A then-and-now photo project I have been working for quite some time, is finally over(?) and published at vice.com/gr.Sunday 3 December 1944 was the day when the batlle of Athens (Dekemvriana in Greek) began. The bitter and ugly civil war that was its aftermath, still casts a dark and long shadow in today’s Greece. Photos 1, 3 & 5 (from 1944), were shot by the great Dmitri Kessel, who was on assignment in Athens during the whole terrible month of December 1944. Most of the amazing photos he shot were not published until 1994, 50 years later. I would like to thank the Hellenic Literary and Historical Archive (E.L.I.A. - M.I.E.T.), for kindly allowing me to study and photograph the incredible book “Ellada tou ‘44″ (ISBN 960-2021-17-9) which contains a very big amount of the photos Kessel shot while in Greece.Photos 2 & 4 (from 1944), photographer unknown. -- source link
