charminglyantiquated: Death/Dracula from the Literary TarotRebecca Roanhorse paired Bram Stoker’s classic novel with Death, a Major Arcana card indicating endings and transformations!My early drafts dipped in and out of death-related motifs, deep shadow, and a pair of thumbs inspired by Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss. In the top right draft I was trying to make his fingers and the spaces between form a skull! It ultimately didn’t read clearly enough, but it was fun to try out! In the final piece, Mina faces the prospect of an irreversible and seemingly inevitable transformation, having already been bitten by Dracula and drunk his blood in return. Everything from the bloodied bandage at her neck to the gilded skull of her candlelight to the funereal coffin/lily/candles pattern of her skirt portend the rapidly approaching end of her mortal life, while Dracula’s hold over her, represented by the cage of his hands, serves as a reminder of what she will inescapably become if the transformation runs its course.You can see more of the cards, and read the author’s reasoning behind each pairing, on the Kickstarter Page!
