Big hunk of galena at the history museum in Joplin, MO with @mattdcarey for scale in the background. . Galena is a lead sulfide with the chemical composition PbS. It is mined in several spots in the Midwest including northwest Illinois, southeast Missouri, and the Tri-State Mining District of SW MO, SE Kansas, and NE Oklahoma. Joplin and the infamous town of Picher, OK are part of the latter. All three of these areas contain what are known as Mississippi Valley Type Deposits. . MVT deposits occur as hydrothermal fluids percolate up through basement rocks using weak areas. These fluids then dry up, depositing ore in higher layers of rock (usually carbonate rocks like limestone). Galena is the primary ore mined for lead in the US. . #geology #mineralogy #mining #oresamples (at Joplin History & Mineral Museum) -- source link
