Construction on the Washington Monument began in 1844, and at that time the work force would have included slave labor. They ran out of funds, however, and the structure remained only about 25% complete at the time of the Civil War when it looked like this:Once construction resumed in 1879, slavery had been abolished throughout the land, and the remaining 75% of the structure was constructed by paid labor.
