I went to an evening Purim party with my 16 month old last night and was chatting with a random mom I’d never met before (whose 18 month old was not there.) Her: Isn’t she tired?? Me: No, it isn’t even her bedtime yet, she goes to bed late and this way she wakes up late and I can sleep in a little. Her: Oh. When does she go to bed? Me: Um… 10:00 or 11:00 but then she isn’t up till 9:00 or 10:00 am. Her: Oh. I don’t want to comment on your parenting, but going to bed so late can really stunt her development. I mean, we also used to do that and then our doctor said that going to bed late can really stunt their development so… Me: (to my toddler, who was pulling at my shirt and saying “more”) What? You want more French fries? Okay, let’s go get some. (To the other mom) Nice meeting you, bye. And, of course, all evening people were commenting on my daughter’s good behavior/vocabulary/how big she’s getting.
