gregorygalloway:On February 15, 1933, President-elect Franklin Roosevelt was giving an impromptu speech from the back of an open car in Miami, FL when an onlooker, Giuseppe Zangara opened fire with a pistol, trying to kill Roosevelt. Instead, Zangara shot 5 people, including the Mayor of Chicago, Anton Cermak, who was standing next to Roosevelt. Cermak allegedly told Roosevelt, “I’m glad it was me instead of you.” He died 19 days later.Zangara confessed to the shooting, saying, “I kill kings and presidents first and next all capitalists.”Under Florida law at the time, a convicted murderer could not share cell space with another prisoner before his execution, but another convicted murderer was already awaiting execution, so another area had to be created for Zangara, which gave rise to the term “Death Row.” -- source link
